Home / Case Studies / Stonebyres Hydro Power Station

Stonebyres Hydro-electric Power Station is situated half a kilometre downstream from Stonebyres Falls near Kirkfieldbank on the NW bank of the River Clyde. It was constructed in 1927. In December 2018, Scottish Power, the previous asset owner, engaged Zenith to carry out civil repairs to the station building.

The project involved roof refurbishment, window replacement, concrete defect repairs, and the removal and re-application of the surface coating to the external walls.

The initial scope of works included:
– access provision,
– external building refurbishment to all four elevations,
– internal refurbishment of the main turbine hall building,
– window replacement (51No.),
– roof repairs and gutter inspections,
– door refurbishment.

During the project, additional concrete repairs were required due to the identification of concrete defect locations via hammer tapping before coating removal. After removing the existing surface coating via grit blasting to the North and West elevations, a significant number of further concrete defects were identified and repaired.
